Hockey Weekend junior B roundup: Meteors upset Kilty B’s

The Fort Erie Meteors handed the Hamilton Kilty B’s their first loss since Oct. 16 when they topped the league-leaders 2-1 in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference action Saturday at the Leisureplex.

“I’m proud of the guys for playing a solid 60 minutes under a lot of pressure,” Meteors coach Nik Passero said. “We had some great performances that will go unnoticed in the scoresheet but that’s what it’s going to take to beat the top teams.”

The win improves Fort Erie’s record to 9-9-1 while the Kilty B’s fall to 19-2.

The Meteors dropped a 7-5 decision to the Kilty B’s earlier last week, which Passero said factored into the game.

“Monday’s loss stung and it sat with us all week,” he said. “We had a great week of practice with one goal in mind and that was to knock off the top team in our barn.”

Duncan Nichols-Delay was solid in net for the Mets, kicking out 38 shots.

Jayden Baldinelli and Joshua DiFrancesco scored for Fort Erie while Nathan Phillips had the lone goal for Hamilton.

Junior Canadians 4 Panthers 3

The Welland Junior Canadians spoiled Tim Toffolo’s debut behind the bench Sunday night in Welland.

Ethan Sharpe, Patrick Cole, Zach Kent and Conner Thompson-Dick scored for Welland.

William Stewart had two goals for the Panthers while Florian Xhekaj added one.

Toffolo took over as Panthers head coach last week after the organization parted ways with Chris Lukey.

Trevor Goodyear made 30 saves in goal for the win.

Ethan Langevin made 25 saves for the shutout as the Caledonia Corvairs blanked the visiting Niagara Falls Canucks Saturday.

Christian King, Calvin Crombie, Ethan Doyle and Mitchell Ferras scored for Caledonia.
