he Fort Erie Meteors continue their mastery over the Niagara Falls Canucks.
The Meteors rallied for an improbable 6-5 overtime victory over the Canucks in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action Saturday night at the Leisureplex.
Fort Erie has defeated the Canucks in 11 straight games.
The Mets trailed 5-3 with less than a minute remaining before tying the game on goals by Kyle Adamo (19:03) and Matthew Herb (19:22). Joe Macchione then won it at 1:41 of overtime.
“We deserved better for the way we played the first 40 minutes,” Meteors coach/generaI manager Nik Passero said. “Thought we were pretty dominant and they were opportunistic and (Niagara Falls goaltender Mihailo) Corovic stood on his head.
“We seem to have this never die attitude that I’m really starting to love.”
Passero singled out Adamo, Sam Barrett and Dom DiFrancesco.
“They put the team on their backs and then Match (Macchione) finished it off.”
Macchione had two goals and an assist while Herb, Adamo, Barrett and Marcus Regina scored.
Nate McFarlane, Braden Carruthers, Landen Toole, Benjamin Kay and Sam Ostafin replied for the Canucks.
The Meteors (15-6-3) lead Caledonia by four points for third and Thorold by seven for third place.
“Those are two big points at home that were needed,” Passero said. “Thorold is playing really well and we have to keep pace with them.”
The Mets visit Thorold Friday.
Falcons 3 Corvairs 0
The St. Catharines Falcons gave head coach Tyler Bielby a win on his birthday with a solid 3-0 triumph at Caledonia Saturday.
The win lifted the Falcons (19-3-2) past the idle Hamilton Kilty B’s and into first place by one point. St. Catharines also owns a game in hand.
Following a scoreless first period, the Falcons took a 2-0 lead in the second on goals from rookie Parker Forlin and Chris Reid. Nate Robertson added one more in the third for the Falcons.
Josh Johnson made 33 saves to record his first shutout of the season. Johnson is now 12-1 with a 2.09 goals-against average and .918 save percentage.
“Great road win in Caledonia,” Bielby said. “Little sloppy to get going but Josh shut the door in the first period until we found our legs. The Reid, Forlin, (Cam) Knight line were our pulse in the second period and we were able to build a two-goal lead. Forlin was a big part of both goals. Always nice to see a 16-year-old rise up in games like that and be the difference.”
SUNDAY
Junior Canadians 3 Panthers 1
Cody Inness scored with just 41 seconds to play to break 1-1 tie as the Welland Junior Canadians topped the visiting Pelham Panthers at the Welland Arena.
Following a scoreless first period, Dawson Abrahams got the Panthers on the board less than a minute into the second.
Welland tied the game at 1-1 when former Panther Cody Miskolczi scored his ninth of the season 21 seconds into the third. Peter Spameni added an empty net goal at 19:52.
Keegan Jackson made 29 saves in a losing effort while Markus Stoikos kicked out 31 Pelham shots to earn the win.
