Weekend Roundup: Mets Bounce Back

Written By: Bill Potrecz

The Fort Erie Meteors rebounded from a pair of tough overtime losses last week to win a pair of games over the weekend in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action.

The Meteors topped the Niagara Falls Canucks 3-1 Friday in the Falls followed by a convincing 7-2 win over the Caledonia Corvairs at home Saturday.

“Really proud of our guys to rebound this weekend after two gut-wrenching games last weekend,” Meteors coach/general manager Nik Passero said.

Jayden Baldinelli, Matthew Herb and Josh DiFrancesco scored versus Niagara Falls while Joshua Smith kicked out 21 shots.

Braden Carruthers replied for the Canucks.

“Friday was an odd game that took us a little bit to get into but our big guys pulled us through with great goaltending from Smith,” Passero said.

Saturday, Kyle Adamo scored twice for the Meteors while Dominic DiFrancesco, Sam Barrett, Doug Doren, Yianni Koukouves and Joe Macchione added singles. Baldinelli chipped in with three assists and Smith made 35 saves for the win.

Tanner Hunt and Brody Leblanc replied for the Corvairs.

“Saturday we started on time and came out firing,” Passero said. “We got scoring from our entire lineup which is always huge. Can’t talk enough about our bounce back and how well we practiced this week. Smith had two great starts for us and was great in the back to back.

“Our power play continues to win us games but this weekend it was our second unit who got on the board as well which is huge.”

The Meteors improved to 11-4-3 and sit in third place, one point behind the Hamilton Kilty B’s for second and two points behind the league-leading St. Catharines Falcons.

Blackhawks 4 Panthers 3

Friday at Port Colborne, the Thorold Blackhawks topped the Pelham Panthers 4-3.

Nathan Kelly, Christian Williams, Dylan Pergentile and Daniel Vasic, on a penalty shot, scored for the Hawks.

Bradley Boville made 26 saves for Thorold.

Dawson Abrahams, Joshua Cacciola and Cameron Savoie scored for Pelham.

Keegan Jackson once again turned in an exceptional performance for the Panthers in goal, kicking out 62 shots.

The teams were scheduled to meet again Sunday in Pelham but the game was postponed due to a power failure at the Meridian Community Centre.

Leblanc netted a pair of goals as the visiting Corvairs doubled the Welland Junior Canadians Sunday night.

Dylan Dekoe, Calvin Crombie, Gavin Sheehan and Alec Stewart also scored.
