Weekend junior B roundup: Meteors back on track

The Fort Erie Meteors shook off their recent struggles and came away with a pair of big wins over the weekend.

The Meteors defeated Niagara Falls Canucks 4-3 in overtime Friday at the Gale Centre and followed that up with a 3-1 win at Pelham Sunday.

Antonino Pugliese’s third goal of the game, 48 seconds into overtime, gave the Mets the win Friday. Marcus Regina also scored.

Tanner McEachern, Matthew Riva and Blake Power replied for the Canucks.

“I am proud of our guys for coming to work Friday in a tough atmosphere and getting out of our slide,” Meteors coach/general manager Nik Passero said. “Our power play stepped up when we had to and our best players were our best players. 

“I think you could say that game didn’t belong in overtime but we got it done and Pugliese had another great night.”

Duncan Nichols-Delay made 33 saves for the Panthers.

Noah Clugston scored a pair of goals Sunday in Pelham while Steven Katsis added one.

Jonah Devereux replied for the Panthers.

“Sunday was a battle and the guys stayed in it even though we weren’t at our best,” Passero said. “Our goaltending was great this weekend. Noah Clugston scores two huge goals for us and we found a way.”

Josh Smith turned back 27 shots for the win.

SATURDAY

Kilty B’s 7 Blackhawks 0

The Hamilton Kilty B’s climbed back into first place with a shutout win over the visiting Thorold Blackhawks.

The Kilty B’s jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period and then added two more in each of the second and third periods.

Justin Monteith and Dylan Abbamont netted two goals each while Sam Shakes, Jeremy Pasma and Colin MacDougall also scored.

Gage Stewart made 19 saves for the shutout.

Corvairs 8 Canucks 2

Ethan Doyle scored a pair of goals to pace the Caledonia Corvairs past the visiting Niagara Falls Canucks in a chippy game that saw a combined 114 minutes in penalties called.

Calvin Crombie, Daniel Moro, Noah Baltzer, Michael Barker, Mason Mantzavrakos and Zack Di Cesare added singles.

Kyle Cupolo and Zach Mambella replied for the Canucks.

Ethan Langevin made 22 saves in goal for the win.

Corvairs 2 Junior Canadians 1

The cellar-dwelling Welland Junior Canadians hung tough against the visiting Caledonia Corvairs Sunday night in Welland.

Zack DiCesare gave Caledonia a 1-0 lead in he the first period before Nathan Duplessis tied the game at 1-1 early in the second period.

Ethan Doyle potted the game winner at 11:55 of the third period for Caledonia.

Hayden Dunford kicked out 31 shots for the win.

Keegan Jackson made 29 saves in a losing effort for Welland.
