Kilty B’s Edge Meteors In Opener

The Hamilton Kilty B’s struck first in their Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League playoff series with the Fort Erie Meteors.

The Kilty B’s edged the Meteors 2-1 Thursday night in Hamilton to take the opener of their best-of-seven semifinal playoff set.

It was the eighth straight win for the Kilty B’s over the Meteors this year after they swept the regular season series 7-0.

“Good road game for us but we didn’t get the job done,” Meteors coach Nik Passero said.

Following a scoreless first period which saw the Kilty B’s hold a 10-7 edge in shots on goal, Hamilton opened the scoring just over seven minutes into the second when former St. Catharines Falcon Dawson McKinney scored.

The Meteors answered on a goal by defenceman Henry Vest at the 13:39 mark of the second.

Fort Erie held an 11-7 edge in shots on goal in the middle period.

The game appeared headed to overtime until McKinney netted his second of the game with 2:34 to play in the third.

Fort Erie, which was not assessed a penalty, outshot Hamilton 33-26 overall and went 0-3 with the man advantage.

“Power play was probably the difference tonight. We carried most of the five-versus-five play. Just have to find a way to score one with the man advantage,” Passero said.

Game 2 is Saturday at the Leisureplex at 7 p.m.

“Different story on Saturday, playing in our barn. Should make some room for our skill guys to get stuff done,” Passero said.
